Volume (sets x reps x weight) is one of the most useful numbers in training and one of the least understood. Here's how to read a volume chart and calculate it yourself if your tracker doesn't have one.
Training volume is sets × reps × weight for an exercise or session — a single number that captures total work done, useful for spotting trends even when weight and reps individually go up and down week to week. If your tracker doesn't chart it automatically, you can calculate it from any logged weight/reps history in a few minutes.
Volume gets mentioned constantly in training advice and rarely explained clearly. It's simpler than it sounds — the confusion usually comes from people treating "volume" and "weight lifted" as the same thing, when volume specifically accounts for reps and sets too.
The actual formula
Volume = sets × reps × weight, for one exercise in one session. Three sets of 8 reps at 100 lbs is 2,400 lbs of volume for that exercise that day. Add up every exercise's volume for a full session total, or track it per exercise over time to see progression on that specific lift.

Why volume matters more than any single set's numbers
Weight and reps individually bounce around — you might do 100×8 one week and 105×6 the next, and neither number alone tells you if that's progress. Volume smooths that out: 100×8×3 = 2,400; 105×6×3 = 1,890. Read as isolated numbers, "105" looks like progress over "100." Read as volume, it's actually a decrease — fewer total reps at the heavier weight didn't make up the difference. This is the specific blind spot volume tracking exists to catch.
Reading a volume chart correctly
A rising volume trend over weeks is generally the goal, but it should rise gradually — a chart that jumps sharply in one week and drops the next usually indicates either a very hard session followed by under-recovery, or a logging inconsistency (a missed set, a wrong rep count) rather than real progress. Look for a steady upward slope across 4–6 weeks, not week-to-week spikes.
A flat or declining volume trend over several weeks, if fatigue or motivation aren't the obvious cause, is one of the more reliable early signals that a deload or program change is due before performance actually stalls out visibly.
Calculating it yourself if your tracker doesn't chart it
Not every logger computes volume automatically — Stay Fit, for instance, logs weight and reps per set today but doesn't chart volume as a built-in feature yet. Since the raw numbers (weight, reps, sets) are already in your logged history, calculating volume for a specific lift is a five-minute spreadsheet job: export your data (JSON or CSV), multiply weight × reps × sets per session, and plot it. It's manual, but it's not blocked by anything — the data you need is already there.
What volume tracking won't tell you
Volume treats a warmup set at 50% and a genuine top set as equally weighted unless you exclude warmups from the calculation, which most manual approaches (and most automatic charts) don't do by default. If you're calculating volume yourself, leaving warmup sets out of the total will give you a more accurate picture of actual training stress than including everything logged that session.
